Short answer

Many anglers and guides point to mid-July through mid-August as the overall sweet spot, because several salmon runs overlap and halibut fishing is good at the same time. But Alaska fishing is available much of the year, and the best time depends on the fish you want. Peak salmon fishing generally runs from May through September, with silver salmon continuing into the fall in some places.

Month by month

These are general patterns on the Kenai Peninsula and in Southcentral Alaska. Dates shift by river and year.

  • May: King salmon begin to show up on some rivers, and weather starts to improve. Early season fishing can be hit or miss.
  • June: Kings continue, and early sockeye runs begin on some rivers. Daylight is very long, and trout fishing opens on some waters.
  • July: Often the busiest month. Sockeye peak on many Southcentral rivers, and late-run kings are fished where open.
  • August: Late sockeye, with silver salmon beginning to arrive. Trout fishing improves as salmon spawn.
  • September: Silver salmon and rainbow trout and Dolly Varden are a highlight, and many guides regard it as one of the best months.
  • October: Fewer anglers, cooler weather, and still good silver and trout fishing in some places.

Best time by species

  • King (Chinook): Mid-May into July, depending on the run. See our Alaska king salmon season guide.
  • Sockeye (red): Commonly peaks in July.
  • Silver (coho): August through September, and into fall on some rivers.
  • Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden: Often best from late August into fall, when they feed on loose salmon eggs.
  • Halibut: Commonly May through September in coastal and Cook Inlet waters.

Beyond salmon

Alaska has plenty of other fishing. Interior and Southcentral waters offer Arctic grayling, northern pike, burbot, Arctic char, rainbow trout and Dolly Varden. Saltwater anglers can target halibut, lingcod and rockfish. If you want fewer crowds, these alternatives can be a good fit outside the peak salmon weeks. In late summer, the egg-imitation “bead bite” for trout behind spawning salmon is a popular technique.

Where to base yourself

What city in Alaska has the best fishing?

There is no single answer. Popular bases include Kenai, Soldotna and Cooper Landing for river salmon and trout, Homer and Seward for saltwater halibut and salmon, Anchorage for access to Southcentral rivers, and Ketchikan and Sitka for Southeast fishing. Choose by the species and season you want.

Cost of a trip

What is the average cost of a fishing trip in Alaska?

Costs vary a great deal. Guided day trips, ocean charters, fly-in lodges and do-it-yourself trips sit at very different price levels, and prices change from year to year. Flights, lodging, licenses, gear and fish processing add to the total. Get current quotes from several operators instead of relying on one figure.

Winter fishing

Alaska offers year-round options. Winter king fishing is available in some saltwater areas, such as near Homer, and ice fishing is popular on frozen lakes. Conditions are cold, daylight is short, and some fisheries are closed.

Regulations and halibut closures

What days can you not fish halibut in Alaska?

Halibut rules, including which days of the week charters can retain fish, bag limits and size limits, change by management area and by year. Because these rules are updated, check the current Alaska Department of Fish and Game and federal regulations for your area before booking.

Alaska also uses emergency orders on salmon fisheries, so verify regulations before each trip.
