Can you catch crappie in winter?

Yes. Crappie remain catchable through the winter, and many anglers like the season because the fish group up, which can mean steady action once you find them. Some of the larger fish of the year are caught in cold weather, though that depends on the lake and is not guaranteed.

The trade-off is that cold water slows fish down. They are generally less willing to chase a bait, so presentation and location matter more than in warmer months. In regions where lakes freeze, ice fishing is a popular way to reach them. For the period when ice starts to melt, see crappie fishing at ice out.

Where crappie hold in cold water

In open-water lakes and reservoirs, winter crappie often move to deeper areas and stay near cover or structure. Spots worth checking:

  • Deep brush piles and submerged trees, often near creek or river channels
  • Channel edges and ledges where deeper water is close
  • Bridge pilings and riprap
  • Deeper boat docks with water beneath them
  • Creek mouths and tailrace areas below dams, where moving water can concentrate baitfish
  • Warm-water pockets, such as areas near power plant discharges where they are legal and safe to fish, or shallow spots warmed by sunshine on mild days

Depth varies by lake, but many winter fish are found in water deeper than where you would look in spring. Because crappie often suspend above the bottom, a depth finder can help show where fish are sitting relative to cover.

Fish tend to stay in the same general area for long stretches in cold weather, so once you find a productive brush pile or ledge, it can pay to return.

Presentations that tend to work

Think slow, small, and vertical.

  • Vertical jigging over fish you can see on sonar, or straight down along structure.
  • Minnows on a light hook or jig head, fished slowly. Live minnows are a reliable cold-water choice.
  • Small jigs, often 1/32 to 1/16 ounce, in tubes or small grubs. Subtle colors and also bright ones both have a place. Try both if you are not getting bites.
  • Long pauses. Sometimes holding the bait nearly still is the trigger.

Light line, commonly in the range of 4 to 6 pound test, helps with sensitivity and can keep small baits at the right depth. Bite detection can be subtle, so a sensitive rod tip and watching your line are important.

When during the day to fish

Water temperature changes can matter a lot. On sunny days, midday and afternoon can be better as the water warms slightly. Low-light periods can also be productive. After a sharp cold front, fish often become less active, so be patient and try fishing slower.

Will crappie bite in hot weather?

This question comes up because the fish are often discussed by season. Crappie do bite in warm weather, including very hot conditions, but they typically move deeper or to shaded cover during the heat of the day and are often more active in early morning, evening, or at night. The same principle applies as in winter: find the right depth and cover.

How long will crappie keep on ice?

For food safety, keep fish cold as soon as they are caught and keep them cold until you clean them. Cleaned fish on ice should be eaten or frozen within a short time, and exact guidance for storage times varies. Consult a food safety resource such as your local extension service or health agency for recommended storage times.

Winter safety

Cold-water immersion is dangerous. Wear a life jacket if fishing from a boat, tell someone your plans, and dress in layers. If you fish through the ice, check conditions carefully with local sources and avoid questionable ice. No fish is worth the risk.

Check your regulations
